Three CGAs Receive $10,000 Grants for Accounting Research
Three certified general accountants (CGAs) have each been awarded $10,000 grants to fund academic research projects as part of their doctoral studies. Luanne Currie of the School of Business at the University of Alberta is receiving funding for the first time, while Shelley Lukasewich, also of the University of Alberta, and Gulraze Wakil, an Ontario CGA studying at Ohio’s Kent State University, are having their funding extended for a second year.

Under its Doctoral Funding Program, the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada) provides up to $10,000 a year for a maximum of three years to CGAs interested in pursuing a PhD in accounting and auditing related fields.

Currie is researching absence culture in the workplace and how it translates to the operational and financial performance of the firm. Lukasewich is investigating the evolution of corporate reporting, and specifically non-GAAP reporting from guidance to standards to law for publicly traded Canadian entities with an emphasis on income trusts. Wakil is working on a study of dividend taxes and the implied cost of equity capital in Canada.

“Accounting standards and the profession’s regulatory environment are changing so rapidly that there is a great need for academic research that explores the implications of these changes,” said Anthony Ariganello, CPA (DE), FCGA, President and CEO of CGA-Canada. “The Doctoral Funding Program is one of the ways that CGA-Canada supports this much needed research. It also helps accomplished CGAs to move into academia where they can make on-going contributions to accounting research.”
