CGA-Canada Enhances Partnership with the Caribbean
The Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada) strengthens its relationship with the Caribbean. Ron Colucci, FCGA, Chair of CGA-Canada and Marcel Murrell, FCGA, President (Elect) of CGA Caribbean signed an agreement that will expand opportunities for CGAs in Canada and the Caribbean.

“This partnership solidifies long-standing relations between Canada and the Caribbean,” said Colucci. “It also recognizes the growing importance of accounting professionals who can meet the challenges of a global economy.”

The CGA program has been offered in the Caribbean since the 1970s. Membership has grown to approximately 1000 CGAs and students in that region.

Under this agreement, the newly created CGA Caribbean will serve and represent members and students throughout the English speaking Caribbean. Its enhanced role will include granting the CGA designation, and administering the national member standards and the CGA Program of Professional Studies.

“This region wide model is ideal for our members and consistent with the Caribbean free trade model,” said Murrell. “CGA, an international accounting designation which focuses on the highest professional and education standards will benefit the region as it transitions to an integrated economic jurisdiction.”

Local leadership, a greater sense of community among CGAs in the region and a stronger voice for members in both Canada and the Caribbean are all benefits of this new affiliation agreement.

The signing ceremony took place at the residence of the Canadian High Commissioner to Barbados, on December 1, 2007 where many dignitaries gathered to celebrate this event.
