Top Academic Achievers Receive CGA-Canada National Awards
The Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada) congratulates the 20 newly certified CGAs and students who earned national student awards based on results of the 2007-08 academic year. The awards signify outstanding academic performance in the CGA Program of Professional Studies and were presented to the recipients at provincial admission to membership ceremonies held throughout the fall.

Krista Saunders of Sundre, Alberta, is the recipient of the ENCON Group Inc. Insurance Public Practice Award, valued at $5,000. This award is given to a recently certified CGA who is graduating from the public practice career option and has earned the highest average mark for the Advanced External Auditing (AU2), and Advanced Personal and Corporate Taxation (TX2) examinations.

Rachel Lazaro of Mississauga, Ontario, has won the Porter Hétu International Award, valued at $1,500. The award is given to a recently certified CGA who is graduating from the public practice career option and has achieved the highest final course mark in Advanced External Auditing (AU2).

The Carswell Taxation Award, recognizing the student who achieves the highest grade in Advanced Personal and Corporate Taxation (TX2), has resulted in a tie this year. Manvir Manhas of British Columbia and Mildred Solite-Steinbring of Winnipeg, Manitoba, share the award.

Awards of Excellence are presented to the highest academic achievers within each level of the CGA Program of Professional Studies. Hua (Amy) Chen of Scarborough, Ontario – also the recipient of a Top Ten Recognition Award – won the Award of Excellence for the Professional Level. Other Award of Excellence recipients were Arun Nanthakumaran of Toronto, Ontario (Level 4), Ryan Castaneda of Vancouver, B.C. (LevelⅢ), Hongying Yang of Toronto (LevelⅡ), and Zelaina Strug-Zelmer of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (LevelⅠ).

The Top Ten Recognition Awards honour the best academic performers amongst the newly certified members nationwide. This year, three new CGAs tied for the tenth place position, resulting in 12 award recipients: Yixue Wang (Toronto), Hua (Amy) Chen (Scarborough), Yin Yi (Toronto), Caroline Martires (Toronto), Jianhua Li (Burnaby, B.C.), Emily Terzieva (Toronto), Ying Yan (North York, Ontario), Neeta Nayak (Ontario), Blandine Nganso (a Quebec CGA working in Paris, France), Dominic Chan (Richmond, B.C.), Xiao Yan Mavis Wu (Markham, Ontario), and Wei (Cherry) Li (Burnaby).

“CGAs, as a group, tend to be high achievers so to be recognized in this way is a significant accomplishment,” said Tony Ducie, FCGA, Chair of CGA-Canada. “These award winners are representative of the high calibre of talent that is attracted to the CGA program and indicative of why CGA is the fastest growing accounting designation in the country.”
