  CGA-Canada Honours UBC Ethics Professor

Dr. Michael McDonald of the University of British Columbia (UBC) has been recognized by the Certified General Accountants Association for his contribution to the CGA Program of Professional Studies. Dr. McDonald, Maurice Young Chair of Applied Ethics at UBC, was granted Honorary Membership by CGA-Canada, an honour granted by the association only five times previously.

“CGA-Canada has the leading model of ethics education among professional education programs,” says Anthony Ariganello, FCGA, CPA (Delaware), President and CEO of CGA-Canada. “Our emphasis on ethics is one of the reasons that CGAs continue to rise to positions of leadership and trust in the business world. Dr. McDonald’s contribution to the association’s ethics education has been outstanding.”

Dr. McDonald was the founding director of the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics at UBC and has served as a consultant to CGA-Canada since 1991. In that capacity, he contributed to the integration of ethics throughout the CGA curriculum, worked closely with CGA course developers to include ethics content into course materials, and compiled and edited a handbook of ethics readings that is an essential resource for students in the CGA program.

“The subject of ethics is a hot topic in business education today, but the CGA program has been a leader in ethics education for many years,” says Dr. McDonald. “I have greatly enjoyed working with CGA-Canada on this major project in accounting ethics education and am most grateful for this recognition.”

Honorary Membership is granted by CGA-Canada to recognize significant service to the association by someone who is not a CGA.

More information about the CGA approach to ethics education, and the Code of Ethical Principles and Rules of Conduct, which guides the conduct of all CGAs, is available at www.cga-online.org/canada.
