  Updated competencies to keep Certified General Accountants ahead of the curve
  The Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada) is once again updating its requirements for certification as it continues to position CGAs for financial and strategic leadership roles.

  With an emphasis on even greater depth, the 2010 CGA Competency Framework is the result of an extensive practice analysis involving 6,000 CGAs, a national task force, and a blue ribbon panel. The ambitious process – which identifies the changing needs of the accounting profession and the marketplace – is repeated every three to five years. The competencies are written as statements that specify the roles, tasks, and *s of a professional accountant. The association uses them to assess whether candidates, regardless of their career option, have carried them out to the standard expected by clients, employers, and the public.

  “Business depends on CGAs for much more than reliable financial information,” said Anthony Ariganello, President and CEO of CGA-Canada. “It expects CGAs to provide the analysis, insight and leadership that are required to make important financial and business decisions. By updating our requirements, we will ensure that CGAs continue to have what it takes to steer organizations, through good times and bad.”

  The CGA Competency Framework outlines 130 professional competencies – grouped under leadership, professionalism, and professional knowledge – that CGA candidates must demonstrate to qualify for the designation. The Framework is used by CGA-Canada to develop and enhance CGA education, examination, experience and professional development requirements. It is also a resource for:

  Employers and the public, to better gauge the value of CGAs as financial professionals and business leaders;
  Students, to understand the knowledge, skills and proficiency levels that they must demonstrate to become a CGA, and to assess their career development;
  The academic community, to prepare students to enter and successfully complete the CGA program.

  “Regularly updating our competencies means that we’re always thinking ahead,” Ariganello added. “In a very real way, it’s what keeps CGAs at the forefront of the accounting profession.”

  The Framework will be revised periodically.
