　　7 Occupational safety
　　7.1 The main legislation is contained in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 as supplemented by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations. Enforcement is the responsibility of the Health and Safety Executive.
 
　　7.2 The Regulations impose duties upon employers to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks likely to arise in the workplace. Measures must be taken to eliminate or reduce these risks. If the risks cannot be negated the employer must provide protective equipment. Safety procedures and training must also be provided.
 
　　7.3 Employees also have duties to co-operate with the employer on safety matters.
 
　　7.4 Remember that in addition to having to comply with statute employers have a common law duty to provide a safe system of work.
