A Year of Reinforcement and Change:

From one corner of CGA-Canada to another — in Burnaby and Ottawa, and in our affiliate offices internationally — the Association worked to strengthen the designation and build important relationships in line with its strategic goals.

CGA-Canada expanded its sponsorships and community involvement, much of it in and around the nation’s capital. In December, we hosted the successful first national Summit on Tax Simplification with representatives from business, academia and government. On the research front, our rich repository grew to include reports on the topical issues of Canadians’ household wealth, youth unemployment, and labour shortages in skilled trades. These efforts, along with our ongoing work with international accounting organizations, fortified our reputation, at home and abroad.

We enhanced the Association’s professional development resources as part of our commitment to provide a diverse and engaging online learning experience for members, students and business professionals. This included launching PD Net’s Tax Portal, a one-stop resource for personal tax information in Canada, and laying the groundwork for a new Excel Certificate Program.

Over the year, the landscape of the accounting profession continued to change and, in late April, CGA-Canada re-entered unification talks with the newly created Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada). This move was in step with decisions taken by most Canadian and all international CGA affiliates. CGA-Canada subsequently signed a participation agreement to formalize integration discussions with the national CPA body. The target date for an Integration Agreement with CPA Canada is this fall.

To our members, students, staff, volunteers and stakeholders, we wish to express our sincere appreciation for your support this past year, and ask for your continued support in the year ahead.
