Balogun and Hope Hailey analyse the type of change based on its scope and nature. The categories
are as follows:

The factory closure is clearly a “big bang” change. For Cynex as a whole, however, it does not
significantly change the paradigm – they are still a manufacturer of electronics products – so it would
be classed as reconstruction. For the factory itself, it will cease to exist, which does change the
paradigm, so this will be classed as revolution.
JSW identify five styles of change management - education & communication – collaboration &
participation, intervention, direction & coercion. In this situation, rapid change is required to stop
losses and it does not seem feasible to involve the workers in the decision to close their own factory.
In effect, the change simply must take place and so the likely style is direction, or possibly even
coercion if the change is resisted.
